Your participants do not have to download anything or sign up anywhere. They open the link or scan the starting code, and the tour begins straight away in their browser.
A phone with a camera. No account is required: by default participants take part completely anonymously and their progress stays on their own device.
StepByStepApp is a progressive web app. If a participant adds the tour to their home screen, the app downloads the whole tour — texts and photos — and everything keeps working without a signal afterwards. For tours in woods, cellars or on a crowded festival site, that is the difference between smooth and stuttering.
Put this on the sign at the start: "Open the tour before you set off and choose Add to home screen. Then everything keeps working where the signal drops out."
The tour itself keeps running in all those cases; only those parts wait until there is a connection again.
Most organisers let groups of three to five people share one phone. That also counts as one visitor.
