Writing good steps
Keep every step under a hundred words and give one thing at a time. People read this standing up, outdoors, often with children already walking on.
What works
- One thing per step. A story or a question or a task, not all three.
- Make them look, not read. "How many windows are there in the spire?" beats a paragraph about the tower.
- Build a thread. A recurring character or a story that unfolds step by step keeps people going to the end.
- Make the last step worth it: a finish on the terrace, a code that unlocks something, the leaderboard result, the final photo.
What does not work
Long historical texts, questions you could have answered at home, and tasks you cannot carry out with a phone in your hand.
Write in one language
Write your tour in whichever language comes easiest to you, and have it translated afterwards.
